Highlanders Add Two Defenders To 2020 Roster
VICTORIA, B.C. – Victoria Highlanders FC are pleased to announce the signings of Maurizio Abdi and Kayden Miner, pending league approval. The two defenders are the latest Highlanders Residency players to join Vikram Virk’s 2020 Pacific Coast Soccer League squad.
“Both Maurizio and Kayden have been apart of the PCSL set up for the last two seasons and we are glad to have them back,” stated Virk.
Abdi has played with the Highlanders program in the PCSL the last two seasons, including last season which saw the Highlanders Second Team win the league and finish as runner-up in the PCSL Challenger Cup playoffs. The 2000-born defender is coming off a season with Highlanders affiliate Westcastle United in the Vancouver Island Soccer League. Abdi brought a steady presence on the pitch as he helped Westcastle United to an undefeated season (12-6-0) and a second-place finish in Division 1. He played youth soccer with the Calgary Villains in the early years of his development.
“"Maurizio is a tough defender to come up against due to his athleticism,” added Virk. “He is strong, he is quick and is very committed. He is a great person to have around the team as well.”
Miner has also spent the last two seasons with the Highlanders Program in the PCSL, including the 2019 squad that made it to the PCSL Challenge Cup Finals. The Victoria native played his youth soccer years with the VI Wave program. The 2019-20 VISL season saw the 2002-born player suit up for Westcastle United. In early-2019, Miner travelled to Germany to take part in trials with German clubs.
“Kayden is a technically sound player,” commented Virk. “He is calm, confident on the ball and can cover multiple positions across the back line. He is an experienced defender at this level and we are glad to have him back.”
The Highlanders open their season at Royal Athletic Park as they host the First Leg of the Juan De Fuca Plate against Vancouver TSS Rovers on Sunday, May 3rd. Kickoff is set for 2PM.
