Bent, Campanile, Waters, and Ruby Selected in 2019 CPL-U SPORTS Draft

VICTORIA, B.C. – Highlanders FC are pleased to announce that four Highlanders’ alumni were drafted in the 2019 CPL-U SPORTS Draft which saw 14 athletes selected from university programs across the country. Cory Bent, Marcus Campanile, Charlie Waters, and Jake Ruby, all former Highlanders within the past two seasons, were selected in the annual draft.

Bent, a quick-footed forward that spent the 2018 season with the Highlanders, was the top selection of the draft as he was drafted 1st overall to the Halifax Wanderers. The Preston, England native is coming off a successful 2019 USL League Two season that saw him finish with two goals and two assists in nine games with the eventual Northwest Division-winning side Calgary Foothills FC. He is also coming off a solid campaign with the Cape Breton Capers, having collected six goals and three assists in 12 games.


Campanile, a steady midfielder that also spent the 2018 season with the Highlanders, was the next selection as Valour FC drafted him with the 2nd overall pick. The Edinburgh, UK product just wrapped up his fourth season with the Cape Breton Capers that saw him chip in with three goals and an assist in 12 games. Campanile spent the 2019 USL League Two season with Calgary Foothills FC, joining university teammate Cory Bent, where he finished the season with a goal and two assists in ten contests.


Waters, a forward from the Highlanders’ 2018 season, was selected in the 2nd round with the 13th overall pick by Valour FC. The native of Blackpool, England is coming off a stellar season with the Cape Breton Capers as he recorded 10 goals, six assists, and 35 shots in 10 games. Waters was named Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Rookie of the Year in 2017.


Ruby, a reliable and versatile defender, was selected with the 7th pick in the 2nd round, 14th overall, by the Halifax Wanderers. During the 2019 USL League Two season, the North Vancouver product played in nine games with the Highlanders, logging 798 minutes with one assist and three shots. Ruby is coming off his first year with the Trinity Western Spartans where he posted three goals, two assists, 31 shots, and compiling 1520 minutes on the pitch in 17 games.
