VICTORIA, BC – Highlanders FC (5W-1D-8L) concluded the 2017 Premier Development League (PDL) season on a positive note, defeating Seattle Sounders U-23 2-1 on Friday night before battling back to earn a 1-1 draw against Foothills U-23 on Sunday afternoon in Calgary.

VHFC vs. Seattle Sounders U-23

Friday’s Man of the Match was awarded to striker Paddy Nelson, who netted both of Victoria’s goals in the eventual win. Nelson’s brace helped the Highlanders get out to a 2-0 lead before the Sounders would get one back late in the second half.

In his second consecutive start between the woodwork, goalkeeper Ty Venhola was sharp when called upon and was unlucky to not earn a second clean sheet win. Sounders pressed late to try and salvage a draw but would be unable to find the back of the net, as Victoria held on to earn their second win in as many matches and close out their home schedule on a high.

The Highlanders then travelled to Calgary for their Season Finale versus Foothills U-23, battling back in the second half to earn a draw thanks to Francesco Bartolillo’s tally late.

Calgary’s Bruno Zebie scored late in the first half to give the home side the lead, but a resilient Highlanders squad would battle back to earn their first point off their Northwest Division rivals.

The draw opened the door for Timbers U-23 to capture the Division title, which they took advantage of late Sunday evening with a 3-0 win over Lane United FC.

The Highlanders final weekend of the PDL season saw them leapfrogging Lane United to finish in fourth place in the division with 16 points.

Friday’s match also featured the annual presentation of the Lake Side Buoys’ Supporters Choice Award following the final whistle. Voted on by the fans, this year’s recipient was striker Sho Goto, who finished the season with five goals, three assists and a team-high 19 shots in 1117 minutes of play.
